- A statement given by Jess Lippincott Baily, the newly appointed US Ambassador in FYROM, has sparked a heated debate among ethnic slavs, who claim that the Ambassador "negates the existence of the FYROM people."

"Mr. Jess Lipinkot Bailey will come to service in the country in which he negates the existence of the FYROM people. Namely, during a questioning in the Committee on Foreign Relations he expressed that FYROM Slavs were a majority and ethnic Albanians a minority in the country," writes Mina, a slavic web resource, in an article "New US Ambassador, Not Making Friends in FYROM."

The reaction comes as a result of the fact that ambassador Baily, who is soon expected to start his mission in Skopje, had named the FYROM majority population as “Slavs” in the September 17 hearing in front of the foreign policy committee in the US Senate.

At the request of the president of FYROM, the EU Ambassador in Skopje apologised yesterday (19 November) for having called the majority of the country’s population “Slavs”, a development that could harm efforts to find a solution to FYROM’s name dispute with Greece.

EU Ambassador Aivo Orav made a statement in an attempt to calm accusations that the EU was denying FYROM's the right of self-determination. President Gjorge Ivanov asked the EU envoy to apologise, local media reported.
Orav spoke last Thursday to the European Parliament's foreign relations committee in Brussels, using the term “Slav Macedonians” to describe the majority of the country’s population.

“Respect for human rights deteriorated throughout the year” reads the report on 2011....

The human rights group states that FYROM acted “in violation of FYROM’s international obligations” when in July 2011 the parliament changed the 2002 Amnesty Law, which granted amnesty to former ethnic Albanian insurgents in the 2001 conflict, to include those charged with war crimes.

The move resulted in the prosecution dropping four war crimes cases, returned in 2008 from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to FYROM. All four cases involved members of the now disbanded Albanian insurgents, some of which now occupy high political positions.

Ethnic Albanians protests against police arrests of suspects wanted in connection to the recent killings in Skopje were marred by vandalism but did not result in major incidents....

Some 10,000 mainly young Albanians gathered in front of Skopje's Jaja-Pasha Mosque after the midday prayer in the Albanian dominated municipality of Cair to express anger over the arrests.

The crowd later moved to the centre of the city, stopping before the Skopje court building and the government.

FYROM's police are on alert in the capital, Skopje, in Tetovo, Gostivar, Debar, Struga and other towns where ethnic Albanian activists, using Facebook and Twitter, have announced street protests after Friday’s midday prayers.
The rallies are directed against police arrests of so-called radical Islamists, wanted in connection to last month’s murders of five people near Skopje.
