UN envoy meets with Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot leaders. (through a win-win approach)

UN, 17 September 2014 – The United Nations Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide today met today with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, who reaffirmed their commitment to lead negotiations through a win-win approach and reach a settlement soon.
“The leaders met today in a friendly and constructive atmosphere following their fruitful discussions at dinner last night,” said Mr. Eide in a statement to the press.

Ban Ki-moon stresses need for Cyprus settlement in meeting with new UN envoy

UN,  4 September 2014 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today stressed the importance of reaching a lasting settlement in Cyprus as the new United Nations envoy on this issue prepares to meet with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities tomorrow.

During a meeting with his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, Mr. Ban underscored the UN’s commitment to facilitating the achievement of a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, according to a note issued to the media.

The Secretary-General noted that Mr. Eide was assuming his functions at a “promising moment” in the Cyprus peace process, with fresh momentum having been generated by the Joint Declaration adopted by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders in February this year.

Nicos Anastasiades to Turks: Trust me

Nicos Anastasiades has called on the Turkish side to trust him ahead of a second round of peace talks which are scheduled for this week.

Asked why a Turkish Cypriot should believe in the head of Greek Cyprus’ government, Anastasiades said: “I’m reversing the question, why doesn’t he believe me? I’m coming from a village where Turkish and Greek Cypriots lived together.” 

Turkish Cypriot Leader: Settlement on Cyprus Possible This Year

Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu said he believes there can be a settlement in the 40 year-long division of Cyprus this year.
Eroglu said after talks in New York Monday with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that his goal is reaching a deal with Greek Cypriots in the shortest possible time and having both sides put the agreement to serrate referendums.
A U.N. spokesman said Ban reaffirmed his continuing personal attention to Cyprus and is committed to helping both sides reach a deal.

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

I am very happy to be back on the island, nearly two years after my second visit in June 2012. It is a pleasure to see so many familiar faces and I thank you for accepting my invitation to this dinner.

Let’s just stay as friends, Turkish Cypriots to Greeks...

In the complicated relationship between Turkish and Greek Cypriots, the best prospect is for the two sides to ‘remain friends’ without getting married,  Eroğlu says on his so called republic’s 30th anniversary.

Creating a single Cypriot nation composed of Turks and Greeks is impossible, and if the two sides cannot agree on a peaceful solution, it would be better for them to remain “friends” while enjoying sovereignty in their respective territories, the president of Turkish Cypriots has suggested.

North clampdown on Republic of Cyprus passports ...

THE TURKISH Cypriot authorities have taken new measures to deter Turkish Cypriot use of passports issued by the Republic of Cyprus.

According to yesterday’s Turkish Cypriot press, the ‘cabinet’ of the breakaway regime decided on April 9 to prohibit the use of the Cyprus Republic passport by Turkish Cypriots who travel abroad for activities supported by the breakaway state.

The ban includes visits and/or meetings relating to scholarships, courses, seminars or social, cultural and sports activities.

The decision stipulates that in such cases only the passport of Turkey or the ‘TRNC’ can be used. Those who do not abide by the decision will not be included in the scope of the support granted by the ‘cabinet’ for travelling abroad.

The ban effectively forces those wishing to travel abroad to do so from Tympou (Ercan) airport in the north via Turkey.
