UN, 17 September 2014 – The United Nations Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide today met today with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, who reaffirmed their commitment to lead negotiations through a win-win approach and reach a settlement soon.
“The leaders met today in a friendly and constructive atmosphere following their fruitful discussions at dinner last night,” said Mr. Eide in a statement to the press.

Ban Ki-moon stresses need for Cyprus settlement in meeting with new UN envoy

UN,  4 September 2014 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today stressed the importance of reaching a lasting settlement in Cyprus as the new United Nations envoy on this issue prepares to meet with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities tomorrow.

During a meeting with his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, Mr. Ban underscored the UN’s commitment to facilitating the achievement of a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, according to a note issued to the media.

The Secretary-General noted that Mr. Eide was assuming his functions at a “promising moment” in the Cyprus peace process, with fresh momentum having been generated by the Joint Declaration adopted by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders in February this year.

‘Save us, Erdoğan!’ Greek Cypriot businessman, Leondis Hristou, begs Turkish PM

A Greek Cypriot businessman has urged Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan “to save” him from the "Greek Cypriot government in the south" (sic).

Leondis Hristou, 56, who has a bus and taxi business, addressed Erdoğan as “the guarantor of the Republic of Cyprus” in a letter to the Turkish prime minister.

Nicos Anastasiades to Turks: Trust me

Nicos Anastasiades has called on the Turkish side to trust him ahead of a second round of peace talks which are scheduled for this week.

Asked why a Turkish Cypriot should believe in the head of Greek Cyprus’ government, Anastasiades said: “I’m reversing the question, why doesn’t he believe me? I’m coming from a village where Turkish and Greek Cypriots lived together.” 

Turkish Cypriot Leader: Settlement on Cyprus Possible This Year

Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu said he believes there can be a settlement in the 40 year-long division of Cyprus this year.
Eroglu said after talks in New York Monday with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that his goal is reaching a deal with Greek Cypriots in the shortest possible time and having both sides put the agreement to serrate referendums.
A U.N. spokesman said Ban reaffirmed his continuing personal attention to Cyprus and is committed to helping both sides reach a deal.

UN hosts meeting with Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot negotiators

24 February 2014 – “Substantive discussions” started today in the resumed talks aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, a United Nations spokesperson confirmed, following a meeting today between Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart, Kudret Özersay.
“They completed their exchange of views on process and started substantive discussions on issues connected to different chapters,” said the spokesperson for the Secretary General’s Good Offices Mission in Cyprus.

Turkish FM meets with his Greek counterpart in Greece:"Common culture" should always be protected and respect to institutions should be tackled when religious issues are in question.

Turkish foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkish and Greek Cypriots had the will of contributing to the peace process, adding "As long as Turkey and Greece approach to the Cyprus issue with a common perspective, I am sure that peace will easily come to the island." 

Davutoglu and Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos held a joint press conference after a bilateral meeting on Friday in Athens, Greece.Saying they discussed the Cyprus issue and Turkish-Greek relations during the meeting, Turkish minister added that the bilateral relations between the two countries also gained pace with the meetings of the High-level Strategic Cooperation Council (HSCC) which also added a new dimension into foreign trade and human affairs. 

Cypriot community leaders fail to agree on resumption of reunification negotiations. -"Unfortunately there is a long way to go before negotiations can resume," said the president Anastasiades

Cyprus's Greek and Turkish community leaders failed on Monday night to remove obstacles preventing the resumption of reunification negotiations.

Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades, who is also the president of the internationally recognized government of the eastern Mediterranean island, invited Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to dinner in a bid to agree on a joint statement setting out the basic principles for a Cyprus solution.

Let’s just stay as friends, Turkish Cypriots to Greeks...

In the complicated relationship between Turkish and Greek Cypriots, the best prospect is for the two sides to ‘remain friends’ without getting married,  Eroğlu says on his so called republic’s 30th anniversary.

Creating a single Cypriot nation composed of Turks and Greeks is impossible, and if the two sides cannot agree on a peaceful solution, it would be better for them to remain “friends” while enjoying sovereignty in their respective territories, the president of Turkish Cypriots has suggested.

North clampdown on Republic of Cyprus passports ...

THE TURKISH Cypriot authorities have taken new measures to deter Turkish Cypriot use of passports issued by the Republic of Cyprus.

According to yesterday’s Turkish Cypriot press, the ‘cabinet’ of the breakaway regime decided on April 9 to prohibit the use of the Cyprus Republic passport by Turkish Cypriots who travel abroad for activities supported by the breakaway state.

The ban includes visits and/or meetings relating to scholarships, courses, seminars or social, cultural and sports activities.

The decision stipulates that in such cases only the passport of Turkey or the ‘TRNC’ can be used. Those who do not abide by the decision will not be included in the scope of the support granted by the ‘cabinet’ for travelling abroad.

The ban effectively forces those wishing to travel abroad to do so from Tympou (Ercan) airport in the north via Turkey.

Dimas concerned at Cyprus issue progress ....

Foreign Minister Stavros Dimas has expressed his government's dissatisfaction over the stalemate in the direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem, stressing that the Turkish Cypriot side has continuously retreated in the course of the negotiations.

Dimas, who will be accompanying Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos on his two-day official visit to Cyprus, told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the Cyprus issue remains an issue of invasion and occupation for the Greek government, and stressed that Greece will continue to struggle for a just and viable solution and for the reunification of the island.

Έχουμε την κατοχή, τον εποικισμό, τους λαθρομετανάστες που διοχετεύονται από τα κατεχόμενα και τις Αγγλικές Βάσεις, έχουμε ξεχειλίσει από κοινοτικούς που αφήνουν τους συμπατριώτες μας άνεργους, πληρώνουμε φόρο υποτελείας στους Τουρκοκύπριους, συνεχίζοντας να τους επιχορηγούμε ποικιλοτρόπως (ενώ αυτοί δεν έδωσαν τίποτε και καρπώνονται την ευρωπαϊκή ιδιότητα απολαμβάνοντας ταυτόχρονα τον σφετερισμό των περιουσιών μας), ενώ εξευτελιστήκαμε εντελώς αγοράζοντας ρεύμα από τα κατεχόμενα.

The fairy tale continues for APOEL Nicosia in Europe as the Cinderella of the Champions League eliminated Lyon in the penalty shootout and reached the last eight of the competition on Wednesday.

Greek goalkeeper Sakis Chiotis saved two kicks in the shootout to send the Cypriot champion to the quarterfinals of the competition, an unprecedented feat for any team from the island.

Former AEK Athens player Gustavo Manduca scored in the ninth minute at Nicosia’s GSP stadium to cancel out Lyon’s 1-0 victory in the first leg of the round-of-16 tie in France.

The team of former Iraklis coach Ivan Jovanovic held on to its lead throughout the 90 minutes as well as the extra-time, despite having to play from the 113th minute with a man less due to the second yellow card shown to Brazilian Manduca.

The capacity crowd at the 25,000-seater stadium held its collective breath as the two teams went to penalties: Chiotis dived twice to his left to save the shots by Alexandre Lacazette and Michel Bastos and give APOEL a 4-3 win in the shootout as the Cypriot team made no mistakes from the spot.

“We represent Cypriot Greeks, Cypriot soccer and of course Greece, as above all we are a Greek team,” APOEL spokesman Panikos Hatziliassis told Cypriot state radio RIK after the end of the game.
