The year-long program of events to celebrate the centenary of the liberation of Thessaloniki and Western Macedonia was officially launched by Vassilios Tolios, the Consul-General of Greece in Sydney. He urged the community to support the events held to promote Greece and Macedonia Hellenism.

Highlights of the celebrations, to be held throughout Sydney, includes the Alexander the Great exhibition in Sydney's Australian Museum and the launch of the award-winning novel Macedon: Child of a God by author Paul Hansen.

Την ενεργό ανάμειξη της ελληνικής παροικίας έτσι ώστε να έχει την μεγαλύτερη δυνατή επιτυχία η προσεχής έκθεση για τον Μέγα Αλέξανδρο, επιδιώκει το Αυστραλιανό Μουσείο Σίδνεϊ.

Για το σκοπό αυτό προγραμματίζεται δημόσια συγκέντρωση την ερχόμενη Παρασκευή, 24 Αυγούστου, στην αίθουσα της Αδελφότητας «Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου» στο Marrickville, με ελεύθερη είσοδο.
Κύρια ομιλήτρια θα είναι η ομογενής Θεοδώρα Μηνά-Γιαννιώτη, η οποία ανέλαβε πρόσφατα την ευθύνη του προγραμματισμού των επισκέψεων του κοινού, και στο πλαίσιο αυτό επικοινωνεί με διάφορες κοινωνικές ομάδες και φορείς.

The Australian Macedonian Advisory Council (AMAC) this week distributed a 1944 communication from the US Secretary of State, which it says captures the origins of the present-day name dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

The message, written as an airgram on Boxing Day in December 1944, by Secretary of State Edward Stettinius to US diplomats and consular officers, contains his views and recommendations in relation to the manoueverings of political factions within Yugoslavia and Bulgaria as WWII in Europe entered its final phase.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr has maintained the UN approved name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia despite receiving correspondence from MP Harry Jenkins to do otherwise.

Γεια, δεν είμαι ούτε δημόσιος υπάλληλος, ούτε κλέφτρα. Δεν πίνω ούζο, δεν σπάω πιάτα, δεν λέω "όπα" στην καθημερινότητα μου. Δεν ξέρω τον Γιώργο, το Γιάννη ή το Νίκο από την Ελλάδα, αν και είμαι σίγουρη πως είναι πολύ καλοί. Η χώρα μου είναι δημοκρατική, εξάλλου αυτή εμπνεύστηκε τη Δημοκρατία. Μιλάω ελληνικά και άλλες πέντε γλώσσες. Οι περισσότεροι στη χώρα μου μιλούν πολλές ξένες γλώσσες. Θα μπορούσα να "ράψω" τη σημαία της χώρας μου στο σακίδιό μου αλλά η κληρονομιά της δεν έχει γεωγραφικά όρια. Δημιούργησε τη Δύση.

Πιστεύω στον ελληνισμό... Όλος ο κόσμος εμπνεύστηκε από τα ιδανικά του. Και αν οφείλω σε κάποιους χρήματα σήμερα _ και δεν είμαι η μόνη που οφείλει _ είναι επειδή εγώ εμπνεύστηκα την ιδέα της ελεύθερης αγοράς. Και αν με κρίνεις σήμερα είναι επειδή εγώ εμπνεύστηκα την ιδέα της κριτικής.

Οι αρχαίοι μας συγγραφείς έχουν γράψει πολλά για την Μακεδονία, αλλά ατυχώς και δυστυχώς δεν διεσώθησαν πολλά απ’ αυτά. Άλλωστε απ’ όσα έγραψαν οι αρχαίοι μας πρόγονοι για να μας παραδώσουν την γνώση τους – την μεγαλύτερη κληρονομιά που είχε ποτέ λαός σ’ αυτόν τον πλανήτη! – μόνον ένα 3% διεσώθη, από μανίες και λόγους που δεν είναι της παρούσης.

The legacy of Alexander the Great ...

Brilliant tactician, drunken barbarian, commanding general, compassionate man - all these have been used to describe Alexander the Great. The enigma that surrounds Alexander is as great as his epithet. The intrigue associated with him, his influence and his status, is evident even today.

Although he died at the tender age of 32, the impact he had on spreading Hellenism throughout the world was astounding. All of this and more is about to be explored in the latest exhibition for the Australian Museum in Sydney.

The ghosts of Smyrna in Izmir ....

There is something about travel to our lost homelands that creates spectral yearnings in me. I have had the great fortune to visit and to experience nearly every country bordering Greece, or where the Byzantine legacy still remains in culture or edifice. Nowhere were the ghosts more numerous than in my visit to Smyrna last autumn.

This is probably because Byzantine and Hellenic legacy is officially expunged from the record in Izmir, whereas in Constantinople there is still a tiny Greek community and the Patriarchate of Constantinople maintains a slipping grip on the spiritual legacy of Byzantium, and over all Orthodox. It could be, too, that what the city represents simply transcends the grave for Byzantine descendents.

Whatever it was, even Constantinople did not stir up the same whirl of spectral emotions as Smyrna.
