The United States has ordered the first secretary of the Cuban mission to the UN to leave the country within 24 hours, following a confrontation during a UN General Assembly session, announced Mike Waltz, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
On Tuesday, during a UN General Assembly meeting, a heated exchange took place between the Cuban and American delegations after Waltz launched a sharp verbal attack against Havana. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez approached the podium to protest, at which point Waltz shouted at him to step away.
"Secretary of State Rubio has signed an order to expel a diplomat, the first secretary of their delegation, who shoved and attempted to assault one of our diplomats. He is no longer here. He will be on a plane bound for Havana within 24 hours," he said on Fox News.
As reported by the New York Post, a member of the Cuban delegation attempted to seize a smartphone from an American diplomat who was recording the incident.
