The European Union is in the process of forming a delegation to conduct negotiations with the Russian side; according to media reports, one of the goals of this move is to prevent Kyiv from capitulating. This information was reported by the television channel Euronews, citing sources.
Reportedly, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is insisting that Björn Seibert, the head of her cabinet, should lead the delegation for potential talks with Russia, rather than representatives of EU member states or European Council President António Costa.
The publication notes that this is the first time there has been a discussion about shifting the approach toward Moscow that has been in place since 2022, a policy that had effectively amounted to a diplomatic boycott.
According to Euronews, the shift in policy toward Russia was prompted by the shock European leaders felt following recent moves by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The American leader struck a deal with the Russian Federation, reportedly involving diesel, suspended certain anti-Russian sanctions, and demanded that elections be held in Ukraine.
Furthermore, Europe interpreted the restrictions placed on Kyiv’s use of Starlink as a sign that Trump is prepared to force Ukraine into capitulation.
