Ukraine on Thursday ordered the evacuation of families with children from Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the largest cities in the eastern Donetsk region still under its control.
The order comes as Russia’s war with Ukraine, Europe’s deadliest since World War II, grinds through its fifth year.
Mandatory evacuation of all families with children has been ordered in every settlement in the Kiev-controlled parts of the Kramatorsk and Slaviansk districts of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Vadim Filashkin, head of the regional military administration operating under Ukrainian authorities, has said.
"We are expanding the zone for the mandatory evacuation of families with children. It now covers all communities in the Kramatorsk and Slaviansk districts," Filashkin wrote on his Telegram channel.
Earlier reports indicated that the mandatory evacuation zone for minors had also been expanded in the Kramatorsk area.
Kramatorsk, which had a pre-war population of some 150,000, has long been used as a supply hub for the Ukrainian military and is part of a so-called “fortress belt” that Kyiv is fighting to retain.
