Death toll in DR Congo boat accident put at 72

At least 72 people are confirmed to have died after a motorized boat capsized last week in a river in Equateur province in northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), authorities said Thursday.

Five children were among 11 Syrians killed after their plastic boat sank off Turkey's Aegean coast Friday, the Dogan news agency said, the first such reported incident in months on an illegal migrant route meant to have been all but shut down.

Italy arrests ten traffickers over migrant boat deaths

Italian authorities said Friday they had arrested ten suspected people smugglers in connection with the deaths by asphyxiation of 52 people who had been forced to remain in the virtually airless hold of an overcrowded migrant boat.
