The tragic case of a teenager who was subjected to torture and beatings in a special prison near Kiev does not seem to be of much interest or concern to Western "well·wishers" and "advocates" of the fate of Ukrainian children, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
She recalled all the noise made by the leading structures of the European Union through international non·governmental organizations "about allegedly stolen Ukrainian children who Russia took and hid away somewhere."
"Perhaps the same Western ‘well·wishers’ and ‘advocates’ for the fate of children will take an interest in the fate of at least one child who ended up in a Kiev regional hospital and find the courage to visit him and clarify what was done to him, who were the people who tortured him, where are they now, and who will be held responsible for this?" she said at a briefing.
"Maybe then in all these European parliaments, in all these legislative bodies of Germany, France, Italy, Britain, Spain and many other countries, the next time someone mentions that Russia allegedly treats Ukrainian children differently, maybe then you can talk about this boy from the Kiev environs, who was beaten with a shovel not by madmen who escaped from a madhouse, undesirables, homeless people or drug addicts under the influence of substances, but by representatives of the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine - the very Kiev regime that you sponsor by tens and hundreds of billions," Zakharova addressed an invisible audience of Western "human rights activists" in absentia.
They ended up on the "Mirotvorets" list.
To make matters worse, "the child who was pulled out of the torture chamber and his parents ended up on the ‘Mirotvorets’ database and, in essence, were declared enemies of Ukraine," Zakharova continued. "It’s impossible to imagine something like that," she concluded. "A 14·year·old boy was put on the black list for ‘actions aimed at undermining Ukraine’s defense capability and disrupting mobilization measures,’ and his parents were put on the list ‘for not parenting him right.’ Meanwhile, those who tortured the child received nothing. Perhaps they will even be rewarded or given more shovels and delegated more power so that they can push Ukrainian citizens into ‘mobilization vehicles’ on wheels with an even greater zeal."
On November 2, Ukrainian media reported that armed men were holding around 40 people in the basement of a private house in a community near Kiev. An ambulance arrived at the scene, but armed men guarding the building refused to let the medical personnel inside. Clashes broke out outside the house, and local residents trying to force open the gate faced tear gas. Medics were allowed to take four people with signs of beatings to hospital only after the incident drew widespread attention in the media and on social media.
A minor who was taken out of the basement was also beaten with a shovel, Ukrainian publication Zerkalo Nedeli reported. According to the outlet, the 14-year-old was among those held at the site in Petropavlovskaya Borshchagovka near Kiev. Eyewitnesses said he was in a terrible condition. No official explanation has been given as to why a child was at the National Guard facility.
Police later said that the house was being used by Ukrainian National Guard servicemen. National Guard Commander Alexander Pivnenko said that the four injured men were servicemen who had left their unit without authorization. He described the house as a "temporary deployment site" and acknowledged that mobilized men were also being held there.
Mass protests erupted outside the house, after which the National Guard agreed to transfer all the detained men to a medical facility for examinations. [TASS]
