Ex-president Santiago Peña is taken to the Presidential Escort Regiment, under arrest and heavily guarded

On November 7, footage was released showing the transfer of former Paraguayan President Santiago Peña to the Presidential Escort Regiment, following his arrest at his residence in Asunción amid heightened tension and public protests.

The police acted on a warrant issued by the Prosecutor’s Office, which filed charges of abuse of trust against Pena and suspects him of involvement in the embezzlement of funds through Ueno Bank.

Earlier in the day, Pena was impeached. Supporters of his removal from power accuse the ex-president of a conflict of interest due to alleged ties with Ueno Bank.

On November 3, the Central Bank imposed external administration on Ueno Bank, freezing its accounts. The population of Paraguay stands at 7 million people.
