Vučić acknowledged the victory of the opposition "Student List" in the Serbian elections

On October 25, former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić acknowledged that the opposition "Student List" was winning the country's snap parliamentary elections. His remarks were reported that same day by the Croatian news outlet Index.hr.

"I want to inform you that, based on a stratified sample, it is clear: we have lost these elections. The 'Student List' has won," the report states.

According to the former president’s estimates, the opposition will secure 135 out of 140 seats, while Vučić’s party, the Serbian Progressive Party (Srpska napredna stranka, or SNS), will hold around 105.

  1. The student movement that is now taking power emerged after the tragedy of 1 November 2024 in the Serbian city of Novi Sad. At that time, a concrete canopy at the railway station collapsed. Sixteen people were killed. The tragedy sparked mass protests throughout the country, which later grew into a nationwide movement against the government and President Aleksandar Vučić, whom the protesters accused of corruption and the usurpation of power.

  2. Throughout 2025, students organized mass rallies, blocked universities, roads, and government institutions. Teachers joined the movement, and later all kinds of groups did as well – football fans, trade unions, human rights activists.

Over time, the student movement turned into a political force and put forward its own list of candidates in the parliamentary elections – the main rival of the students was the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, linked to Vučić. The party had been in power for as long as 14 years: in 2012 he became Serbia’s first deputy prime minister, in 2014 he headed the government, and in 2017 he became president.
