The Bolsonaros expand their presence in the Brazilian Congress

Flávio Bolsonaro led the field in the first round of Brazil's general elections this Sunday, a result that also saw three members of former President Jair Bolsonaro's family secure seats in Congress.

Michelle de Paula Firmo Reinaldo Bolsonaro, 44, who served as First Lady from 2019 to 2023, became a senator for the Federal District after garnering 28% of the vote in the legislative elections.

Meanwhile, Carlos Bolsonaro, the former president's stepson, won a Senate seat representing the state of Santa Catarina, while Jair Renan Bolsonaro, the former leader's 28-year-old youngest son, secured a seat in the Chamber of Deputies for that same jurisdiction.

With 99.99% of the votes counted, Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party, secured 47.03% of the vote, compared to the 45.16% won by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, of the left-wing Workers' Party (PT).

  1. Brazil's Federal Police are investigating possible US interference in the country's presidential election after receiving a complaint from the Attorney General's Office, the agency's director general said Sunday as voting got underway nationwide.

"This is an investigation underway, a preliminary procedure. The inquiry has not yet been formally published, but we already have an investigation in progress," Federal Police chief Andrei Rodrigues told reporters in the capital Brasilia.

Rodrigues said the case had been forwarded to the agency's Intelligence Directorate for analysis as Federal Police worked to ensure the smooth running of the 2026 elections.
