Dozens of tractors are traveling along a road near the Italian city of Matera to demand action in response to falling purchase prices for grain, olive oil, and milk, rising production costs, and competition from cheaper imported food products, the press reports.
Furthermore, according to media reports, farmers are calling for support measures for the sector, including aid to cover fuel and energy costs, as well as greater protection against imports.
Agricultural organizations consider the measures announced by regional authorities to be insufficient, the press notes.
Turin, clashes during a protest against the high cost of living and high fuel prices: thousands of people marched from Piazza Castello to Porta Nuova.
Bologna, fresh clashes this afternoon in front of the train station in Piazza Medaglie d’Oro: water cannons and tear gas were deployed in response to a heavy barrage of stones and other objects thrown by hooded youths.
Protests against the high cost of living: in Milan, police charged demonstrators in Piazza Duomo. Scenes of urban guerrilla warfare unfolded in the heart of the city, with dozens of people detained. Clashes also took place in Turin and Bologna, where the railway station was closed.
Meloni stated: “Protesting is a sacrosanct right, but setting cities ablaze is unacceptable. The opposition must condemn this.”
