Former UN high commissioner for human rights, Navi Pillay, to receive 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to South African lawyer and human rights activist Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, who served as UN high commissioner for human rights in 2008-2014, the Norwegian Nobel Committee stated.

The laureate was honored "for her efforts to promote peace and international law," the statement said.

Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, South Africa, under apartheid, Pillay began her legal career challenging racial discrimination and defending opponents of the apartheid system.

She later served as a judge on South Africa's High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, before becoming UN high commissioner for human rights.
