On October 29, Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, delivered a message to the nation in which she emphasized that the country is focused on rebuilding its institutional framework so that future elections "do not become a problem."
Earlier, Rodríguez announced on social media that she would address the nation, expressing her conviction that there is already a "clear roadmap for the democratic, economic, and social transformation that this historical moment demands", a statement coming nearly ten months after the U.S. bombing of Venezuela and the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, lawmaker Cilia Flores.
In her address, she emphasized the importance of the dialogue initiated between her government and segments of the opposition aimed at reforming key branches of state, such as the judiciary and the electoral system, as well as demanding the release of financial assets that have been frozen abroad for years, and advancing the reconstruction of areas most severely affected by the two earthquakes that struck last July.
"Venezuela’s political horizon is not measured by a date on a calendar, but rather by a series of objectives that we must achieve," Rodríguez asserted. He reiterated that elections will be held in the country under stable conditions, ensuring they do not become "a source of irreconcilable conflict", though no specific timeline for this has yet been established.
In this vein, she indicated that the current priority is to establish a framework for democratic coexistence and guarantees for the participation of all parties, enabling the country to hold elections under conditions suitable for the responsible practice of politics. "Violence is not the way to resolve the controversies that arise in a society; we all have the right to think differently, without fear of any kind of reprisal," she added.
