Canada distances itself from the idea of ​​becoming an EU associate member, according to media reports

Ottawa is not yet ready to accept that status and is treating the relevant statements with caution, even as it seeks to strengthen ties with the European Union, according to media reports.

 "You have heard that she [European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen] also mentioned the idea of ​​associate membership; we haven't reached that point yet. We are focusing much more on achieving concrete results," stated Canada's Ambassador to the EU, Jonathan Wilkinson.

 It was also noted that before making any decision on the matter, Canada would need to determine "what form" this partnership would take.

 Previously, Ursula von der Leyen surprised MEPs by suggesting that Canada could become the bloc's first "associate member", thereby heightening tensions in both Europe's relationship with Washington and the ties between the White House and Ottawa.
