Iran Has No Current Intention to Close Strait of Hormuz – FM

Iran has no current intention to close the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Al Jazeera on Sunday.

Iran also does not have any plans to do "anything that would disrupt navigation in it at this stage," Araghchi told the news outlet.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The northern coast belongs to Iran, while the southern coast belongs to the UAE and Oman. The strait is an important route for the supply of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The Strait of Hormuz remains open to oil tankers, General Mohsen Rezaei, former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, the elite unit of the Iranian Armed Forces) said as quoted by the Financial Times.
