Syrian army may use kamikaze pilots against west, Assad officer claims. At least 8,000 suicide 'martyrs' ready to foil US warplanes hand-in-hand with Hezbollah and Iran, says regime loyalist

The Syrian air force is considering using kamikaze pilots against attacks by western forces, a Syrian army officer operating air defences near Damascus has claimed in an interview with the Guardian.
The officer said 13 pilots had signed a pledge this week saying they would form "a crew of suicide martyrs to foil the US warplanes".
The Assad loyalist, in his 30s and serving with the Syrian army's air defence section 10 miles from the capital, said: "If the US and British armies launch a single rocket we will launch three or four, and if their warplanes raid our skies they will face hell fire.

Greek suicide epidemic continues: Debt-strapped pensioner hangs himself ...

A 61-year-old Greek pensioner has hung himself from a tree in a public park after succumbing to the pressure of crushing debt. A note in his pocket indicates he is merely the latest in a rash of economic crisis-induced suicides.
The pensioner’s lifeless body was found dangling by an attendant in a public park not far from his home in the suburb of Nikaia, Athens. The attendant also found a suicide note in the man’s pocket, The Athens news reports.
The man, identifying himself as Alexandros, said he was a man of few vices who “worked all day.”  However, he blamed himself from committing one “horrendous crime”: becoming a professional at the age of 40 and plunging himself into debt. He referred to himself as a 61-year-old idiot who had to pay, hoping his grandchildren would not be born in Greece, as the country’s prospects were so bleak.

The man who killed himself in Syntagma Square in central Athens on Wednesday morning has been identified as a 77-year-old pharmacist.
It has emerged that he left a note criticising the government and explaining his reasons for taking his own life.
“I can’t find another way to react apart from putting a dignified end to things before I start looking through garbage in order to survive and before I become a burden for my child,” the note left by the pensioner said, according to reports.
It is not clear if the 77-year-old had the note with him or whether he left it somewhere for his family. It is not yet known what kind of financial problems the pensioner may have had.
The head of the Attica Pharmacists’ Union, Constantinos Lourantos told Skai radio he knew the man, who was identified as Dimitris Christoulas.
“He was a calm, family man,” said Lourantos.
In the suicide note, Christoulas compares the Greek government to Second World War administration led by army officer Georgios Tsolakoglou that collaborated with Nazi occupiers.
