A fire has broken out at a military plant in the US city of Scranton, Pennsylvania, that has been producing munitions including artillery and mortar shells for supply to Ukraine, US media reported on Tuesday.

Egypt to hurt its economy by canceling trade agreement (Turkish FM)

Egypt’s government “will damage the country and the people’s interests and prosperity” with its decision not to extend a comprehensive free trade agreement with Turkey, Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tanju Bilgiç has said.

“The current agreements with Egypt ... only held a small place in Turkey’s trade with the region, but made significant contributions to Egypt’s economy,” Bilgiç said in a written statement late Oct. 28.

Egypt not to renew trade route agreement with Turkey

An Egyptian foreign ministry official confirmed on Monday that Cairo will not renew an agreement with Turkey on trade routes when it expires next April.

"The foreign ministry has informed the Turkish side with Egypt' s desire not to renew the trade agreement," which facilitates transport of Turkish products to foreign markets such the Gulf after the closure of the Syrian borders, the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Under the deal, signed during the reign of Egypt' Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, who was toppled in July 2013, Turkish products destined for Gulf and other foreign markets would be transported from its Mediterranean port of Iskenderun to a number of Egyptian ports.

Egyptian writers and political movements have called for a boycott of Turkish products in response to what they describe as “unjustified” attacks on Egypt by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Advocates of the boycott note that Egypt is a major importer of Turkish products and that a boycott of the products would take a toll on the Turkish economy.

Egyptian lawyer Samir Sabri filed a lawsuit last week to force the Egyptian government to ban the entry of Turkish products into the country. A court is expected to rule on the case on Dec. 2.

Television anchor and writer Gamal Anayet has also called for a boycot of Turkish products and has even encouraged Egyptians to drop Turkey as a tourist destination.
