The EU said Saturday that its top official Ursula von der Leyen would visit the Italian island of Lampedusa, as Rome called on Brussels for help after a surge in migrant arrivals.

Italy has ended its Mediterranean sea rescue mission that has saved the lives of at least 100,000 migrants, mainly from Africa and the Middle East.

The Mare Nostrum, or Our Sea mission, closed Friday, to make way for the European Union's new search and rescue mission for migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. Triton, the EU operation, began Saturday.

The Italian operation started a year ago after a shipwreck left more than 350 men, women and children dead near the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

EU Mission to Help Italy with Migrant Crisis to Start in November

BRUSSELS, — The European Union plans to launch a mission to help Italy cope with swarms of migrants crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa, the EU said on Tuesday.
Called Operation Triton, the mission will be managed by Europe's border control agency, Frontex. It will reinforce Italy's own rescue operation, Mare Nostrum, which began after 366 people drowned just a mile from the Italian island of Lampedusa when their boat capsized a year ago.

Schulz in Lampedusa: “We have humanitarian obligations to help people fleeing war and persecution"

European Parliament president Martin Schulz was in Lampedusa Friday to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy on 3 October 2013 when 366 migrants lost their lives trying to reach the small island off the Sicilian coast.

 While in Lampedusa the president will also meet the families of victims and participate in a conference on the Mediterranean's migration crisis.

Dying to get to Europe: nearly 450,000 asylum seekers a year make their way to EU

Asylum applications in the EU were up by some 100,000 in 2013 compared to the year before, while at least 600 people are believed to have died while trying to reach Europe via maritime routes. MEPs will discuss the latest developments on 24 September when the European Commission presents the latest annual report on immigration and asylum to the civil liberties committee. The report stressed that the EU needed to do more on immigration, asylum and the smuggling and trafficking of human beings.

Νέους κανόνες, που θα διευκρινίζουν το πώς οι φύλακες των συνόρων που συμμετέχουν σε θαλάσσιες επιχειρήσεις του ευρωπαϊκού οργανισμού για τη διαχείριση των εξωτερικών συνόρων (Frontex) θα πρέπει να συμπεριφέρονται στους μετανάστες και πού θα πρέπει να τους αποβιβάζουν, ενέκριναν οι ευρωβουλευτές την Τετάρτη. Ο εν λόγω κανονισμός, που έχει ήδη συμφωνηθεί ανεπίσημα μεταξύ Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου και Συμβουλίου, αναμένεται να τεθεί σε ισχύ πριν από το καλοκαίρι.

Αυτό θα οδηγήσει σε μεγαλύτερη αποτελεσματικότητα και ασφάλεια δικαίου στις επιχειρήσεις στα εξωτερικά θαλάσσια σύνορα.
