Turkey, Greece to meet again over Aegean problems

Turkish and Greek diplomats will continue to discuss finding ways to resolve the decades-old problem of the official border between the two countries in the Aegean Sea.

A Sept. 12 statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced that the 58th round of “exploratory contacts” between the two countries would be hosted in Thessaloniki on Sept. 13.

Prime Minister Edi Rama met in Wales with the Prime Minister of Greece, Antonis Samaras, upon the request of the latter. Prime minister Samaras was accompanied in this meeting by the foreign Minister, Evangelos Venizelos and the Defense minister, Dimitris Avramopoulos. Meanwhile, Rama was accompanied by the Foreign minister, Ditmir Buashti and the Prime Minister’s advisor, Endri Fuga.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Konstantinos Koutras stated the following in response to a journalist’s question on articles in the Albanian press, according to which the Greek government intends to issue a call for tenders for exploration for and exploitation of hydrocarbons in areas within Albanian territorial waters:

ΕΥ. ΒΕΝΙΖΕΛΟΣ: Οι έρευνες για τους υδρογονάνθρακες που υπάρχουν στην ελληνική υφαλοκρηπίδα και την ελληνική αποκλειστική οικονομική ζώνη είναι μια σταθερή, ουσιαστική, προτεραιότητα της κυβέρνησης μας.

Με τον Υπουργό Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας, τον Γιάννη Μανιάτη, είχαμε σήμερα εδώ, με τους συνεργάτες μας, μια σύσκεψη, προκειμένου να έχουμε όλοι την ίδια πληροφόρηση και την ίδια εικόνα για τα αποτελέσματα των πολύ σημαντικών σεισμικών ερευνών που διενεργήθηκαν τους προηγούμενους μήνες για την επεξεργασία των αποτελεσμάτων των σεισμικών ερευνών και φυσικά για τα επόμενα στάδια, τα οποία θα οδηγήσουν στην ανάδειξη των παραχωρησιούχων, όπως ακριβώς έγινε και για άλλες περιοχές.

No tension over Russian aircraft near Turkey's airspace. Regarding recent claims that Greek coast guard boats intervened in Turkish boats in the waters of the Imia islands, Davutoglu said....

The incident over the Black Sea on Wednesday in which Turkish F-16 jets pursued a Russian military aircraft flying near Turkish airspace [1] must not be assessed as a sign of tension between the countries, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Saturday.

Davutoglu explained the Russian aircraft was conducting a drill in accordance with international law, and the pursuit by Turkish F-16s was merely an automatic response toward objects approaching airspace.

Davutoglu responded to questions during a press conference at the ministry in Ankara with his Bulgarian counterpart Kristian Vigenin.

Ακόμα και οι φοβίες είναι κουραστικές. Όταν δεν υπάρχει γνώση το μεγαλύτερό μας πρόβλημα είναι οι φοβίες. Αυτό μπορεί να είναι κατανοητό σε ατομικό επίπεδο, αφού ο χαρακτήρας του καθενός είναι και η μοίρα του, όπως λέει ο συγγραφέας. Αυτό όμως που πρέπει να μας απασχολεί είναι στο επίπεδο της χώρας. Δεν μπορεί λόγω του ραγιαδισμού μια ολόκληρη πατρίδα να περιμένει για να διεκδικήσει τα αυτονόητα δικαιώματά της μέσα στο πλαίσιο του Διεθνούς Δικαίου και του Δικαίου της Θάλασσας.
