Indonesia executes drug smugglers by firing squad

Indonesia has executed eight out of nine drug convicts by firing squad despite last-ditch appeals by Australia's foreign minister for a stay of execution so that claims of corruption during the trials of two Australian prisoners could be investigated.

Indonesia has officially notified nine affiliated with the so-called "Bali Nine" drug trafficking ring, including eight foreigners, that they will be executed within days following weeks of delay, but a Frenchman was granted a temporary reprieve after Paris stepped up pressure on Jakarta.

Indonesia court rejects death row Australians' appeal

An Indonesian court has rejected a last-ditch appeal against imminent execution by two Australian drug smugglers.

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the ringleaders of the so-called "Bali Nine" drug trafficking gang, were sentenced to death in 2006 for trying to smuggle heroin out of Indonesia.

Hamas executes 18 for helping Israel in Gaza

Eighteen people suspected of being informants for Israel were executed in Gaza, the Palestinian Islamic movement of Hamas said Friday after losing three of its top military commanders in an Israeli airstrike.

Witnesses and a Hamas website said Hamas militants killed seven Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel in a public execution in a central Gaza square on Friday.

The victims, their heads covered and hands tied, were shot dead by masked gunmen dressed in black in front of a crowd of worshippers outside a mosque after prayers, witnesses and al-Majd, a pro-Hamas website, said.
