Deputy British PM calls for limits on EU migration

LONDON: Migration to Britain from countries joining the European Union should be restricted, the deputy prime minister urged Monday, entering a touchstone debate on immigration and Europe nine months from a general election.

Currently, new members of the EU can wait up to seven years before their citizens gain the right to live and work in other nations in the bloc.

But Nick Clegg, who leads the Liberal Democrats, junior poartner in Britain's coalition government, is to propose an extension to this due to economic differences between countries, according to a released copy of a speech to be given later on Monday.

Switzerland extends labor restrictions for Romanians and Bulgarians

Romanian and Bulgarian workers will still have to cope with restrictions on the Swiss labor market from 1 January 2014 despite the EU countries being forced to lift them from next Wednesday.

The labor liberalization for the work force originating in Romania and Bulgaria will not enter into force as of January 2014 in Switzerland, which is not an EU member state, but a member of the European Free Trade Association and has signed several bilateral treaties with the communitarian bloc which regulate, among others, free movement of people.

Die Grenzen zu Rumänien und Bulgarien werden vorerst nicht vollständig geöffnet. Bundesinnenminister Hans-Peter Friedrich bekräftigte beim Treffen der EU-Innenminister die Bedenken der Bundesregierung. "Nach unserer Auffassung ist der Zeitpunkt zum Wegfall der Grenzkontrollen für diese beiden Länder nicht gekommen." Es seien zwar Fortschritte absehbar, diese reichten aber nicht aus, "die rechtsstaatlichen Zustände herzustellen, die eine Aufnahme in den Schengen-Raum ermöglichen", sagte Friedrich.

AFP - Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, porte-parole du gouvernement, a affirmé jeudi que les conditions d'entrée de la Roumanie et de la Bulgarie dans l'espace Schengen n'étaient actuellement "pas réunies", une semaine après que Manuel Valls se soit dit "plus que réservé" à ce propos.
Comme RMC lui demandait si la France allait s'opposer à l'entrée de ces deux pays dans Schengen (l'espace de libre circulation sans contrôles aux frontières, ndlr), Mme Vallaud-Belkacem a répondu: "Aujourd'hui, nous considérons que les conditions ne sont pas réunies pour que la Roumanie et la Bulgarie puissent intégrer l'espace Schengen."
Donc la France dit non aujourd'hui? "Oui, la France dit non, compte tenu du fait en effet que les conditions ne sont pas réunies, mais la France n'est pas la seule à dire non aujourd'hui", a-t-elle souligné.

Bulgaria Is Losing Patience with Dutch Schengen Block - Foreign Minister

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov has reiterated that Bulgaria is losing patience with the Dutch opposition to Schengen enlargement.

Speaking Wednesday at a joint press conference with his Latvian counterpart, Edgars Rinkevich, Mladenov repeated the comments of Finance Minister Simeon Djankov from last week that Bulgaria's patience towards the Netherlands had been exhausted and that Bulgaria and Romania had fallen prey to political games.
