Hagel to China: US Committed to Defense of its Asia Allies

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is warning that the U.S. will defend its Asian allies in the event of any conflict with China.
The Pentagon chief made his comments Tuesday after meeting in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart, Chang Wanquan.

Hagel said Washington is "fully committed" to treaties obliging it to protect its longtime allies Japan and the Philippines.

Japan and the Philippines are among several Asian countries that accuse China of using intimidation to advance its maritime claims.

Defence Secretary Hagel first foreign visitor to board China’s aircraft carrier

TOKYO — United States Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel expects to visit China’s sole aircraft carrier when he arrives in the country today (April 7), a US official said, in an unprecedented opening by Beijing to a potent symbol of its military buildup.
The planned carrier visit, which will come at the start of Mr Hagel’s three-day trip to China, was quietly approved by Beijing at Washington’s request and had not been previously announced, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The Liaoning, a Soviet-era ship bought from Ukraine in 1998 and re-fitted in a Chinese shipyard, has been seen as a sign of Beijing’s ambition for greater global influence and a reminder of its growing military might.

Im Südchinesischen Meer ist es zu einem kritischen Zwischenfall gekommen. Ein chinesisches Kriegsschiff wollte einen US-Kreuzer stoppen. Dieser verhinderte eine Kollision in letzter Sekunde.

Ein US-Lenkwaffenkreuzer ist im Südchinesischen Meer beinahe mit einem chinesischen Kriegsschiff kollidiert. Nach US-Militärangaben versuchte das chinesische Schiff, die "USS Cowpens" zu stoppen. Das US-Marineschiff habe ein Ausweichmanöver machen müssen, "um eine Kollision zu verhindern", sagte ein Sprecher der Pazifik-Flotte laut US-Truppenzeitschrift "Stars and Stripes".
