Australia repeats China air zone concerns after rebuke

BEIJING: Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop defied a stern rebuke from Beijing on Saturday to repeat concerns that China's recently announced air defence zone has increased regional tensions.

"Australia is concerned about peace and stability in our region, and we don't want to see any escalation of tensions, we want to see a de-escalation," she told reporters in Beijing when asked about Australia's stance on China's Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).

Her remarks came after China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday reproached Bishop for Australia's critical stance on the ADIZ, which China announced last month and covers islands in the East China Sea which are claimed by Beijing and Tokyo.

The Foreign Ministry (of Japan) said Saturday Tokyo has proposed that the International Civil Aviation Organization consider how to address the issue of China's declaration of an air defense identification zone above the East China Sea.
Japan put forward the proposal on Friday in Canada at a meeting of the ICAO, a U.N. agency to promote the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation throughout the world, saying the Chinese move could threaten the order and safety of international civil aviation, according to the ministry.

Chinese fighter jets were scrambled and followed US and Japanese planes that had entered the newly-proclaimed Chinese air defense zone in the disputed area of the East China Sea, Xinhua reports. Two US surveillance aircraft and 10 Japanese F-15 jets were ‘tailed’ by Chinese pilots on Friday. China ordered an urgent dispatch of its Su-30 and J-10 fighter jets to an area in the East China Sea after the foreign aircraft “invaded” the air defense zone, they said.  The reported intrusions came in defiance of the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), established by Beijing last week.

China’s defense ministry has been addressing the international reaction to the new East China Sea air defense identification zone.
The ministry says the zone does not signify an expansion of China’s territorial air space but rather it helps to improve effective safeguarding of the area.
The Ministry of National Defense held a press conference on Thursday, in the wake of some strong reaction to the zone from outside China.

Chinese Defense Ministry: US jets' flight monitored. -Senkaku/Diaoyu issue

China's Ministry of National Defense says it had monitored the path of the two US jets that entered its air defense identification zone Tuesday noon, and that it was able to identified the model of the aircraft.

A ministry spokesman reiterated that China has effective control over the airspace and will monitor any aircraft that enters it.

Two US military flew around the Diaoyu islands in the East China Sea without identifying themselves and their flight path, defying China's rules for the newly declared zone.

Minister at the Chinese Embassy in Japan Han Zhiqiang has rejected Japan’s protest over China's declaration of an air defense identification zone in East China Sea.

He said that the Diaoyu Islands are China’s inherent territory, and its air space belongs to China. The diplomat said Japan doesn’t have the right to intervene and China’s move conforms to international laws and practices.

Han Zhiqiang said the purpose of the move is to protect national sovereignty and safety of China’s land and air. He said the move does not target any country.

China has demarcated an "air-defence identification zone" over an area of the East China Sea, covering islands that are also claimed by Japan.

China's Defence Ministry said aircraft entering the zone must obey its rules or face "emergency defensive measures".

The zone came into effect from 10:00 local time (02:00GMT) on Saturday.

The islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, are a source of rising tension between the countries.

In its statement, the Defence Ministry said aircraft must report a flight plan, "maintain two-way radio communications", and "respond in a timely and accurate manner" to identification inquiries.
