French minister Sébastien Lecornu announced this Monday, October 19, following a meeting of an interministerial crisis task force, that he has instructed prefects to implement a number of partial, localized curfews.
This decision comes amid unrest and property damage across the country, where episodes of violence have persisted for several weeks in the context of ongoing protests.
"I have asked the prefects to put a number of curfews into effect starting tonight," with the aim of "protecting property and businesses," Lecornu stated. "We are facing a specific type of widespread criminal activity, looting. We certainly cannot allow this situation to become the new normal," he added.
As he explained, the government will release an official map later today showing the areas affected by the unrest taking place in several cities. "To put it mildly, we have chaos," he summarized.
At the same time, the head of government emphasized that the measure would not be applied universally.
"These curfews will be localized and limited in scope. It is certainly not a matter of placing all of Paris under a curfew. That would make no sense," he asserted.
