Student protests in Tirana escalated into clashes with riot police on Saturday

According to the EFE news agency, students are protesting against the Albanian government’s policies on higher education.

In response, special police forces have deployed tear gas and water cannons.

The student protests began early last week. At that time, demonstrators set fire to several institutions, including the Ministries of Education and Finance, as well as the Court of Appeal.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, a socialist who has been in power since 2013, has blamed the escalation on social media, which he claims is spreading misinformation, as well as on far-left groups.
