The United States is considering a new plan to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine that envisions European countries increasing their purchases of Russian gas, and Kyiv considering the reopening of pipelines that previously transported that fuel to the European Union (EU), The New York Times reported on Saturday, citing individuals familiar with the negotiations.
The initiative is part of a series of measures promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump to facilitate negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. It would also seek to include economic incentives for Russia as part of a broader agreement aimed at ending the conflict, such as an arrangement to ease restrictions on Russian diesel exports, as well as measures concerning sanctions and tariffs imposed on Russia.
According to sources cited by the newspaper, Washington believes that the resumption of gas exports could help create favorable economic conditions for reaching an understanding.
U.S. presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner reportedly raised the possibility of restoring the transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine during discussions with European and Ukrainian officials.
