It is necessary to avoid the "most catastrophic scenarios" in which humanity finds itself on the brink of survival - Putin

Humanity is undergoing a crucial stage of transformation that encompasses all areas, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated during his address at the plenary session of the 23rd annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club.

"The world has reached a decisive moment of change in its development. And the issue is by no means solely about politics. Politics, as always, stems from profound changes," the leader declared.

In this regard, he detailed that "changes are taking place in every area: from virtually any technology to social structures; from climate to medicine; from military affairs to bioethics; from the future of energy to demographic shifts; and from widespread digitalization and artificial intelligence to entirely new models of economic development."

At the same time, he noted that the world faces a new threat stemming from technologies that reach a new level of mass destruction due to armed conflicts, rapid environmental degradation, or the loss of control over the technological processes set in motion.

Technologies offer fantastic prospects for progress and an improved quality of life, yet they also elevate the potential for universal destruction to a new level.

  1. Putin recalled how a Soviet colonel averted a nuclear catastrophe. He shared this story against the backdrop of the development of AI, which is already capable of making decisions autonomously.

In September 1983, Strategic Rocket Forces Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov received a signal from the missile attack warning system.

  2. We are not trying to scare anyone. The letters to NATO are not an act of intimidation; they are a response to attempts to intimidate us.

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s letter regarding the defense of the Kaliningrad region refers not to nuclear weapons, but to Russia’s use of all available means, Vladimir Putin emphasized.

  4. Putin responded to the NATO Secretary General's statement!

"The NATO Secretary General spoke of 300 million people in Europe. That is precisely why we are talking about deploying all our forces and assets. We will have to leverage our advantages. No one else possesses the kind of strike capabilities that Russia has today."

The Russian president accused the West of breaking promises regarding NATO expansion and noted that "five or six" waves of the bloc's enlargement subsequently took place. Putin pointed out that the goal was to isolate and weaken Russia.

    1. Putin dismissed as absurd the proposal to halt strikes on maritime vessels in exchange for stopping attacks on Russian oil refineries.

According to the president, Ukrainian attacks on Russian facilities caused damage, but following Russia's retaliatory strikes, Kyiv no longer has a steel industry.

  9. Энергетического перемирия не будет. Путин назвал нелепыми предложения о взаимном прекращении ударов и ответил "нет" на предложение согласиться на них.

  11. The events in Ukraine constitute an act of aggression by the collective West against Russia, carried out by the Ukrainian nationalist regime, President Vladimir Putin said during the plenary session of the 23rd meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

"As for aggression, I have already said – or rather, hinted at, albeit somewhat obliquely – but I want to emphasize once again: the events unfolding in Ukraine are also an act of aggression by the collective West against Russia, carried out through the Ukrainian nationalist regime. We oppose any form of aggression. We are in favor of resolving all issues peacefully, through mutual agreement," the Russian leader noted.
