The number of people detained during large-scale protests in France has exceeded 1,300, the newspaper Le Figaro reports, citing data from the French Interior Ministry.
Earlier, French Interior Ministry official Laurent Nuñez stated that approximately 1,000 people had been detained during mass demonstrations against the rising cost of living, which took place across the country on Saturday.
"A total of 1,314 arrests were made throughout France," the report states.
The French Ministry of the Interior noted that these figures are preliminary and subject to revision. According to a report by Le Figaro, French law enforcement authorities have launched several investigations.
Protests began in France in mid-September, when high school students in the Paris suburbs took to the streets to demand improvements to their schools. They were later joined by people frustrated by rising prices, and the demonstrations spread to other regions.
The largest event was a nationwide demonstration on October 17, which, according to the Ministry of the Interior, drew approximately 550,000 participants. French law enforcement used tear gas, stun grenades, and water cannons against the protesters.
