Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has described the deal for Russia to supply over 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel to the global markets, as a “filthy deal.”
Schumer said in a social media post on Friday that the Russian president Vladimir Putin “is helping the Iranians to target and try to kill American troops in the Middle East” and “illegally and viciously invaded our ally Ukraine.”
The top Democratic senator said US President Donald Trump “is doing a deal with the devil to try to help his flailing political fortunes from the shockingly high diesel prices caused by his own reckless, illegal war in the Middle East.”
Trump had said earlier on Friday that Putin agreed to “immediately” supply the diesel fuel. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Washington’s deal “plays into Russia’s hands”.
