A Serbian government plane has brought the body of Ratko Mladić to Belgrade; he died last week at the age of 84 while serving a life sentence handed down by the Hague tribunal for genocide and other war crimes committed during the 1992–1995 Bosnian War.
The plane carrying the coffin—draped in the Serbian flag—landed at Belgrade airport; Mladić’s son and granddaughter arrived with the body, as did Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić, Reuters reports.
Serbian military personnel transferred the coffin to a van which, according to local media reports, was to transport it to a military hospital where an autopsy is scheduled to be performed over the weekend.
A Serbian minister had previously stated that Mladić would be buried with state honors; however, following a sharp reaction from European leaders, the government did not confirm this information, Reuters notes.
According to Serbian media reports, a farewell ceremony will take place in central Belgrade on Saturday, and a funeral service will be held on Monday at a church in a Belgrade suburb, after which Mladić will be buried in a cemetery next to his daughter's grave.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated on Thursday that he expects tens of thousands of people to attend the funeral.
