Large-scale school protests against compulsory military service took place in German cities

Large-scale school strikes against compulsory military service took place in German cities, including the capital, Berlin.

According to the "School Strike Against Compulsory Military Service" initiative group, more than 100 demonstrations were held across the country.

Spokesperson Bela Breitner told the dpa news agency that they intend to continue the strike until the issue of compulsory military service is taken off the agenda.

 The rules of the new military service system came into effect in January. 

A key element is mandatory conscription for young men born in 2008 or later. This measure is intended to attract volunteers and increase the size of the armed forces. 

Should the target figures not be met, the Bundestag may decide to introduce mandatory military service.
