Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States would probably take over the Strait of Hormuz and should be reimbursed for controlling the vital waterway.
Speaking to Fox News, the US president says: "We are taking over the strait. They have nothing. They've got nothing."
He says the US hit Iran "very hard last night", referencing a series of strikes carried out by US Central Command (Centcom) overnight on military assets in the country.
Trump adds: "We have them. We have them in the run. Most of their equipment is gone. Their anti-aircraft stuff is gone."

US President Donald Trump has claimed that America is “taking over” the Strait of Hormuz from Iran, and will act as the “guardian angel” of the key waterway “and get paid for it.” Tehran has earlier declared the strait closed, blaming “hostile actions” by US forces.
Speaking by phone to ‘Fox & Friends’ on Monday, Trump said Iran was getting its “ass kicked” in the war against the US, asserting that the country’s navy, air force and missile capabilities had been “virtually annihilated” and listing senior Iranian leaders he said had been killed.
He added that US troops were continuing to carry out strikes against Iranian targets after he declared a ceasefire with Tehran to be “over” this past weekend.

Trump stated in a post that the US would be compensated for guarding the Strait of Hormuz through a 20% fee on all cargoes passing through the Strait.
Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesman of the Foreign Policy and National Security Committee of the Iranian Parliament, responded to Cheeto in Chief:
"Trump claimed he wants to become the guardian of the Strait of Hormuz. We don't need foreign workers to protect the strait. If he's so determined to be a guardian, he can go guard Graham's grave."
