US considering using Iranian assets for Persian Gulf allies reconstruction

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is considering redirecting frozen Iranian assets to help Gulf states rebuild and repair any future damage caused by Iran, according to the Reuters news agency.

A source cited by the agency said Bessent has also asked his team to assess the extent of the damage already inflicted on the US’s Gulf allies, saying Washington will consider using Iranian assets for those repairs as well.

The New York Post and Fox News carried the same report, with a source quoted as saying the Treasury would use “all available tools to allow all Iranian assets [to] be made available to our Gulf allies to support rebuilding and repairs for any future damage caused by Iran”.

The reports came a day after Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, told CNN that a peace deal hinged on the release of $24bn in frozen Iranian assets.
