Top US Democratic senator slams Trump’s ‘incompetence’

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says “the US is worse off because of Trump’s incompetence, his ego, and his inability to listen to facts”.

“If Trump wants to send hundreds of billions of dollars to Iran, he’ll need to do with Republican votes,” Schumer wrote on X. “Democrats will not be helping Trump send $300 billion to Iran.”

Critics of the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran have accused Trump of agreeing to provide Iran with $300bn to help rebuild the country’s infrastructure and revive its struggling economy.

However, Trump and other senior US officials have said the country will not provide Iran with any money, telling reporters that Tehran’s neighbours, as well as other countries willing to participate, may provide the funds.

  1. . US President Donald Trump believes that for Iran, signing a memorandum of understanding with the United States is "unconditional surrender," Axios news web portal reported.

In an exclusive interview with Axios Trump said that the memorandum of understanding with Iran "probably is unconditional surrender." This is how he responded to a remark by a journalist who pointed out that the US president had previously stated his intention to seek "unconditional surrender" from Tehran, while the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the parties does not indicate a similar outcome of the conflict.

"We defeated them totally militarily," Trump noted adding the war had actually demonstrated America's military strength.

"Who else could have done a blockade like that? I did a naval blockade where not one ship was able to get through. Some tried. It didn't last very long," the US president said.

When asked whether he realized that there are limits to his ability to use force as a result of the conflict, Trump replied: "There are no limits."

  2. The US has dropped its naval blockade of Iran after the two countries signed a deal to end the war in the Middle East.

US Central Command confirmed the end of the blockade on X "in accordance with the President's direction", and said some US vessels would remain "in the general area".

Soon afterwards, Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said he had approved the deal with the US despite having a "different view", without elaborating. He said he allowed it to go ahead after assurances from Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian that he would "protect the rights of the Iranian nation".

  3. Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said on Thursday that he had approved a deal with the United States to end the Middle East war despite having a “different view,” without elaborating.

“In principle, I had a different view (about the memorandum of understanding), but I issued my permission due to the commitment that the honorable (Iranian) president, as the chairman of the Supreme National Security Council, gave me on behalf of himself and other members to protect the rights of the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front,” Khamenei said in message read on state television.

  5. Senators are seeking to block Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's travel funds until the Pentagon submits several overdue reports to lawmakers, including its investigation into a deadly strike on an elementary school in Iran at the start of the US-Israeli war.

According to an annual defense authorization bill, filed this week, much of the travel funds for the defense secretary’s office may not be spent until Hegseth submits "unredacted civilian harm investigations," including for the Feb. 28, 2026, strike on the Minab school. Officials have preliminarily said the US was responsible for the strike, which was blamed on outdated intelligence.
