Syria's army took control of swathes of the country's north, dislodging Kurdish forces from territory over which they held effective autonomy for more than a decade.
The government appeared to be extending its grip on parts of the country under Kurdish control a day after so called President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree declaring Kurdish a "national language" and granting the minority group official recognition.
The Kurds have said the announcement fell short of their aspirations.
The SDF had said it would pull back from the key towns of Deir Hafer and Maksana, as well as some surrounding villages in the Aleppo governorate, whose residents are predominantly Arab.
Syria’s army took control of the area on Saturday and accused the SDF of violating a withdrawal agreement by targeting an army patrol near Maksana, “killing two soldiers”.
The SDF, meanwhile, accused Damascus of violating the agreement by entering the towns “before our fighters had fully withdrawn”.
United States Air Force F-15 fighter jets were spotted flying at low altitude over the eastern Aleppo countryside in northern Syria as Syrian government forces moved into the towns of Deir Hafer and Maskana following the withdrawal of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) units from the area.

The presence of U.S. F-15 fighter jets over the region coincided with the movement of Syrian ground forces, highlighting continued U.S. air activity in northern Syria during a sensitive transition period. The U.S. military has not issued a public statement on the specific flights, but U.S. aircraft regularly operate in Syrian airspace as part of ongoing security missions, including monitoring force movements and deterring escalation.
ReplyDeleteF-15 fighter jets are among the U.S. Air Force’s primary air superiority platforms and are often used for presence patrols and rapid response missions in contested airspace. Low-altitude flights are typically associated with visible deterrence, reconnaissance support, or close monitoring of ground developments.
The Syrian transitional government is in contact with the US administration regarding military action against the Kurdish coalition, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Syrian Foreign Ministry announced in a commentary to Syria TV, stressing that Washington supports Damascus's position.
ReplyDeleteSyrian troops fighting Kurdish-led forces seized the Omar oil field, the country’s largest, and the Conoco gas field in the eastern Deir Ezzor province as allied Arab tribal forces advanced in the oil-rich area along the border with Iraq, officials and security sources said on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteThe takeover of the oil fields that lie east of the Euphrates River — a main source of revenue for the Kurdish-led forces — was a major blow to the group, which officials said had deprived the state of resources used by the militia.
Силы новой сирийской армии захватили нефтяные поля аль-Омар и газовое месторождение Коноко на севере Сирии, где до этого находились основные базы армии США.
ReplyDeleteThe Syrian army and local tribes are crossing the Euphrates on various barges and pontoons, occupying new territories previously controlled by the SDF.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the hasty destruction of bridges across the river only slowed down the pace of Ahmed al-Sharaa's forces, but it could not and will not stop them. Only direct political pressure from the US could save the Kurds, but the Americans have not shown such a desire so far.
