Croatian pipeline operator announces halt of oil supplies to Serbia

. JANAF, the Croatia-based operator of the Adriatic oil pipeline, informed that there is no opportunity since October 8 to perform the oil transportation contract with Serbian NIS because it did not secure a required license.

"JANAF has received information that the company NIS has not obtained the license required to continue implementing the Crude Oil Transport Contract, meaning that, as of 8 October 2025, further implementation of the contract will no longer be possible," the oil pipeline operator said.

"JANAF continues to actively work, in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Croatia and the Company's US legal advisors, on exploring possible solutions in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework," the company said.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic says that he does not blame Russia for sanctions imposed by the US on the NIS company and urged Moscow to find a solution for the problem in cooperation with Belgrade.

"We request our Russian partners to think once again about implications for Serbia and try to find a solution together with us. I am well aware Russians are innocent to sanctions but as the president of the republic, I have no right to allow that my nation continues suffering without cause and I will not allow it," Vucic said in his address to the nation.

In early January 2025, the US Department of the Treasury introduced sanctions against Russian oil producer Gazprom Neft, its CEO Alexander Dyukov, and against Serbian NIS. The company repeatedly received postponements on sanctions from the US since then. Restrictions came into force on October 9. [TASS]

  1. Introduction of sanctions by the United States against Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) company will entail serious political, economic and social implications for the country, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in the address to the nation.

"Today at six o’clock in the morning, the US introduced sanctions, meaning that sanctions against Naftna Industrija Srbije became effective. This is a bad piece of news for our country, although the expected one," Vucic said.

  2. Belgrade is not ready to resort to methods that involve nationalization or "seizing someone else's capital," Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said commenting on the situation with NIS (Neftna Industrija Srbije), which has been subject to US sanctions.

"As a country founded on the rule of law and that doesn’t take pride in appropriating someone else's property, we cannot happily agree to models based on the seizure of someone else's capital or property. We have held and will continue to hold talks with our American partners, and this morning I also spoke with the Russian ambassador - we await Moscow's further reaction," Vucic wrote on his Instagram page (banned in Russia, owned by the Meta corporation, which is designated as extremist in Russia).

He stressed that the state has fulfilled all its obligations to ensure energy stability.
