Trump leaves G7 summit early citing Middle East tensions

US President Donald Trump is leaving the Group of Seven summit in Canada a day early due to the situation in the Middle East, the White House said on Monday.

French President Emmanuel Macron said Trump had made an offer for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

Trump had earlier urged everyone to immediately evacuate Tehran, and reiterated that Iran should have signed a nuclear deal with the United States.

  1. The G7 has struggled to find unity over conflicts in Ukraine and between Israel and Iran as Trump overtly expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and has imposed tariffs on many of the allies present.

    A US official said Trump would not sign a draft statement calling for de-escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict.

  2. US President Donald Trump will cut short his visit to the G7 summit in Canada and return to the US capital, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.

    "President Trump will return to Washington tonight so he can attend to many important matters," she said.

    "President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Much was accomplished, but because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with [G7] Heads of State," Leavitt added in a post on X.

  3. Iranian media soon reported explosions and heavy air defence fire in Tehran. Air defences were activated also in Natanz, home to key nuclear installations 320km away, the Asriran news website reported.

    In Israel, air raid sirens wailed in Tel Aviv after midnight and an explosion was heard as Iranian missiles targeted the country again.

  4. Canada has abandoned any effort to adopt a comprehensive communique to avert a repeat of the 2018 summit in Quebec, when Trump instructed the US delegation to withdraw its approval of the final communique after leaving.

  5. US President Donald Trump has requested that a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) be convened in the White House as he returns early from the G7 summit in Canada, Fox News reporter Lawrence Jones said.

    "I’ve been informed that the President will have dinner with the heads of state of the G7 nations [in Canada] and then immediately depart for Washington. He has requested that the National Security Council be prepared in the situation room [of the White House]," Jones wrote on his account on X.

  6. The US president is deliberating whether to enter the conflict with Iran to bomb its nuclear enrichment facility at Fordo, according to The New York Times.

    The facility can only be reached using the US’s biggest “bunker buster” bomb, the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, using American B-2 bombers, according to The Times.

  9. The Magen David Adom emergency service says it has not received any reports of injuries following waves of Iranian missiles towards central and northern Israel.

    The report comes moments after the Israeli military told residents of northern Israel that it was now safe to leave their shelters.

  10. US President Donald Trump has told his special envoy Steven Witkoff and Vice President JD Vance to try and reach out to Iranian officials later this week, The New York Times (NYT) reported, citing sources.

    According to the newspaper, should such a meeting take place, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will likely represent the Islamic republic.

  12. The Axios news outlet is reporting that the White House is in discussions with Iran on the possibility of a meeting between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi this week.

    Citing four sources briefed on the issue, the outlet said the objective of the meeting would be “to discuss a diplomatic initiative involving a nuclear deal and an end to the war between Israel and Iran”.
