Russian President Vladimir Putin's order for a three-day truce with Ukraine took effect Thursday, a move the Kremlin said would "test" Kyiv's readiness for peace but that Ukraine has slammed as a farce.
It was not immediately clear whether either side was observing the ceasefire, even with world leaders -- including China's Xi Jinping, Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Serbia's Aleksandar Vucic -- in Moscow for commemorations of the end of World War II.
Putin unilaterally ordered the move to coincide with Moscow's Victory Day parade on Friday.

ReplyDeleteRussia's unilateral, three-day ceasefire has proved to be a farce because of continued attacks across the front line, Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, has said.
ReplyDeleteHe accused Russia of 734 violations since its truce came into effect overnight into Thursday, adding that Ukraine was responding "appropriately" to every attack.
Russia's defence ministry insisted the ceasefire - called by Vladimir Putin to mark World War Two Victory Day - was being observed and accused Ukraine of 488 violations.
The Kiev regime will do whatever it can to undermine the ceasefire that Russian President Vladimir Putin declared in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Hero of Russia Major General Sergey Lipovoy, chairman of the bureau at the Officers of Russia organization, told TASS.

But every time, the Kiev regime did its best to undermine those initiatives. The same will happen this time as Russia has come up with a peace initiative calling for a cessation of hostilities for the duration of Victory Day celebrations," he said.
Lipovoy stressed that Kiev would do everything possible to undermine the ceasefire.

Russia's further steps on the Ukrainian settlement will depend, among other things, on how the three-day ceasefire will proceed, Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov said in a commentary on TV Channel One.
