Kremlin slams Europe's decision to lift missile range restrictions for Ukraine 'dangerous'

The decision by a number of European countries to lift restrictions on the range of missile strikes on Russian territory is potentially dangerous and undermines attempts at a settlement, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"If such decisions are made, they will absolutely go against our aspirations to reach a political settlement and the efforts being made within the framework of the settlement," he told reporter Alexander Yunashev.

"This is a rather dangerous decision," Peskov concluded.

Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that his country was lifting any restrictions on the range of Ukrainian strikes with German weapons on Russian territory. According to Merz, the UK and France have made a similar decision.

  1. European weapons will only prolong the agony of the Kiev regime, a senior Russian lawmaker said, commenting on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s words that Berlin was lifting restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Kiev.

"Merz is playing with fire. His decision undermines peace efforts on the negotiating track and is clearly geared toward further escalation. Russia cannot be defeated on the battlefield and further arms supplies to the Kiev regime will only prolong its agony," said Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the international committee of the Russian State Duma, or lower house of parliament.

Supplies of long-range missiles to Ukraine "will mean that Germany and the rest of the European party of war will be accomplices in the Zelensky junta’s war crimes and will be dragged into a direct confrontation with Russia," he stated. "These weapons will be a legitimate target for the Russian military."

  2. Washington cannot be unaware that range restrictions on European weapons supplied to Ukraine have been lifted, as these systems contain US-made components, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

"The thing is, any European weapon has US-made spare parts. According to the rules of military-technical cooperation, every country must give permission to use a French projectile with a US microchip inside. This is how this system works," the Kremlin representative explained.

"Well, in general, yes, certainly," Peskov replied to a comment that the Americans cannot be unaware about the deployment of European weapons.

  3. Europe continues supplying arms to Kiev, thus indirectly participating in the war against Russia, Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a news briefing.

The day before, the Dutch Defense Ministry announced that a new batch of F-16 fighter jets had been sent to Kiev. In addition, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that there were no longer any restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Kiev by Berlin and its allies. At the briefing, Peskov was asked whether this creates additional risks for the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

  4. Germany’s Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil is clashing with conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz over whether the country has lifted restrictions on how Ukraine can use German weapons against Russia.

“There is no new agreement that goes beyond what the previous government had in place,” Klingbeil, a senior Social Democrat, told reporters in Berlin on Monday when asked whether the range limits on German weapons had been scrapped.

Klingbeil’s statement came just hours after Merz told an audience in Berlin that there were now “no more range limitations” on Western weapons sent to Ukraine, including those from Germany.

  6. The recent rise in the number of Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil is detrimental to the ongoing efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict between the two countries, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said.

Over the past week alone, Russian air defenses have downed 1,465 Ukrainian drones over territories outside the active conflict zone, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported on Tuesday.

“At the very least, we can say that these actions by Kiev… are clearly at odds with the pursuit of the peace process,” Peskov told a press briefing that same day. “Of course we condemn these actions,” he said, adding that they “do not contribute to the advancement of the peace process.”

The Russian Defense Ministry stated on Tuesday that the “Kiev regime, supported by certain European countries, has taken a number of provocative steps aimed at disrupting the negotiation process,” which was initiated by Moscow earlier in May.

According to the ministry, there has been a spike in Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory involving drones as well as Western-made missiles. Military officials in Moscow estimated that between May 20 and May 27, air defense systems intercepted more than 2,300 Ukrainian UAVs, most of them operating outside frontline areas.

The ministry added that Russian forces retaliated with high-precision missile and drone strikes aimed “exclusively at Ukraine’s military and defense industrial facilities.”

«Чего Владимир Путин не понимает, так это того, что, если бы не я, с Россией уже случилось бы много по-настоящему плохих вещей, и я имею в виду ПО-НАСТОЯЩЕМУ ПЛОХИХ. Он играет с огнем», — написал президент США.

Trump’s latest comments follow some of the biggest drone and missile attacks on Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale war began in early 2022.
