Mikheil Saakashvili, the exiled former president of Georgia, has been arrested, Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili announced Friday, a day before Georgians head to the polls.
“Our law enforcement had information about his movement from Ukraine towards Georgia and the process was under total control,” Gharibashvili said at a press briefing.
Saakashvili announced in a Facebook post on Friday morning that he had returned to Georgia and urged people to vote for the opposition United National Movement, which he founded in 2001.
