Moscow Never Called Assad ‘Ideal’ Syrian President

Moscow has never said that Syrian President Bashar Assad is an ideal leader, and that the current regime in the country is perfect, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday.

Moscow has never idealized what was happening in Syria, she noted.

"We have never stated that this regime is, sorry for such a word, white and fluffy. We have never said that it is ideal, a one of a kind, making absolutely correct or exclusively right steps," Zakharova stressed at a briefing in Thursday.

"We voiced criticism in the same way," Zakharova outlined.

According to the spokeswoman, the Russian side has spoken of the matters it considered unacceptable both in public and during talks with its colleagues from Damascus.

"One of the achievements, a wise move, which was made by the countries that joined their efforts two weeks ago in Vienna to solve the Syrian crisis, is that Assad’s fate was factored out," the ministry’s spokeswoman concluded.

Western powers have called for Assad’s ousting since the Syrian civil war had erupted in 2011, while Russia has stated that the Syrian people should decide the fate of its leadership.
