The Israeli army has warned the government in war-wracked Syria it
will “suffer the consequences” after four rockets crashed on Thursday
into the north of the Jewish state and the occupied Golan.
“This was the work of Islamic Jihad, an organization financed and working for Iran, and we consider the Syrian government responsible for the firing and it will suffer the consequences,” the army said in a statement.
It was referring to a Palestinian militant group which is based in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military and security sources said four rockets were fired from the Syrian-held sector of the Golan struck the occupied part of the plateau as well as the Galilee region of northern Israel, causing fires but no casualties.
Israel seized 1,200 square km of the Golan from neighboring Syria in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it 14 years later, in a move never recognized by the international community.
Since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011, the Golan has been tense, with a growing number of rockets and mortar rounds hitting the Israeli side, mostly stray, prompting occasional armed responses.

The Israeli military carried out “widespread” strikes inside Syrian territory Thursday, employing artillery fire as well as air strikes, officials said, in a bid to send a strong message to the Syrian regime that further cross-border attacks would not be tolerated...
ReplyDeleteA senior military official told Ynet news that around six targets had been hit with multiple strikes each, including Syrian army weapons facilities and antenna arrays.
“This is a widespread attack both in its scope and in its targets,” the official said. He explained that the harsh response to four rockets fired from Syrian territory earlier in the day was intended “to get across the message” that Israel would not abide by such incidents.
Syrian state television confirmed the strikes, and said damage had been caused to facilities. It said there were no casualties in the attacks. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported earlier that a number of Syrian soldiers had been injured or killed.
The army had earlier blamed Syrian operatives of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group for the rocket attack and said they were receiving orders and finances from Iran............http://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-shells-positions-on-syrian-golan-after-rocket-attack/
