Russia’s UN Envoy Blames Escalation in Ukraine on Kiev’s War Against Own People

MOSCOW, August 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, told the UN Security Council Thursday that the current escalation of hostilities in southeastern Ukraine is a result of Kiev’s war against its own people.

“The current escalation of situation in southeastern Ukraine is a direct consequence of Kiev’s wrongful policy to wage a war against own people,” he said, adding that more than 2,000 people have died in the region, and their numbers are growing.

The number of Ukrainian refugees coming to Russia has reached 814,000 people, he said.

Churkin also called on members of the UN Security Council Thursday to adopt a media statement urging a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Kiev authorities launched a special military operation in mid-April against independence supporters in the southeast of Ukraine, who refused to recognize the legitimacy of the country’s coup-imposed government.

Since the beginning of the military conflict, Kiev has been accusing Russia of sending troops and weaponry to independence supporters in the region.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said earlier on Thursday that Russian troops had entered Ukraine and NATO released images that it claimed showed Russian artillery on the Ukrainian territory.

Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in the Ukrainian crisis, urging Kiev to stop the bloodshed and establish a direct dialogue with representatives of Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

  • Russia-suggested statement on Ukraine ceasefire blocked at UNSC under ‘frivolous pretext’...

A statement calling for a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine was blocked at the UN Security Council under a completely frivolous pretext, Russia's envoy to the UN Vitaly Churkin said, after a heated debate with Kiev again accusing Russia of full-scale invasion.

“The Russian delegation's proposal on declaration of a ceasefire was blocked under a frivolous pretext,” Churkin said after the emergency session of the UNSC meeting, Itar-Tass quotes. “The Security Council as a result of destructive efforts of a number of its members was unable to play its role in resolving the Ukrainian crisis.”

During the meeting, the UN Security Council's permanent representative of Lithuania Raymond Murmokayte stated that the draft document prepared by Russia does not highlight “some serious issues,” namely that anti-Kiev forces “hamper the provision of humanitarian aid on the part of Ukraine's government.”

The Russian proposed text to the UN Security Council all expressed serious concerns about the deteriorating situation in south-eastern Ukraine, and called for “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” as well as the beginning of a dialogue “based on the Geneva Declaration of 17 April 2014 and the Joint Berlin Declaration of July 2, 2014.”
The text also noted the need to “multiply efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the population of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine.”................................http://rt.com/news/183512-security-council-ukraine-russia/

  1. China calls for immediate ceasefire in eastern Ukraine ...

A Chinese envoy on Thursday called for an immediate ceasefire in eastern Ukraine amid reports of a possible escalation in the conflict there.

Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the appeal here at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the latest developments.

"China is deeply concerned and worried about the continued aggregation of armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, which has caused great loss of life and property," Wang told the meeting.

In the current situation, all the parties concerned must exercise restraint so as not to further escalate the situation, Wang said, adding that the Ukraine crisis can only be resolved by political means.

"The priority now is for all the parties concerned to achieve an immediate ceasefire, persevere in efforts to promote a political resolution of the crisis in Ukraine, fully accommodate the legitimate rights, interests and aspirations of every region and ethnic group in the country, take into full consideration all parties' legitimate concerns and thereby achieve a balance of interests among them," he stressed.

The Chinese envoy also urged the international community to put all the parties concerned to make good use of various mechanisms for dialogue and liaison, increase communications and act in a manner conducive to mutual trust.

"China supports all efforts that will contribute to easing the situation, resolving the crisis and promoting a political settlement," Wang added.

It is reported that the fighting in eastern Ukraine has spread southward, near the border of the Sea of Azov and Russia.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday canceled his planned visit to Turkey as tensions escalated in eastern Ukraine, the presidential press service said.

Accusing Russia of "moving its troops into Ukraine", Poroshenko has called an emergency meeting of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) to "develop a plan for further action".

Earlier Thursday, the NSDC said "Russian troops" have captured the Ukrainian key port of Novoazovsk and several towns and villages in Donetsk region.

On Wednesday, Ukraine and the West have accused Russia of launching a new incursion into Ukraine by sending its troops and hardware into the Donetsk region. Russia has denied the charges.
