Arab foreign ministers to make Gaza solidarity visit ‘soon’

A delegation of Arab foreign ministers, including those of Egypt and Jordan, will visit Gaza "soon" in a show of support for Palestinians, Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi said Wednesday.

The ministers will also assess reconstruction needs in the battered enclave after a nearly month-long war between Israel and Hamas, Arabi said.

"An Arab ministerial delegation will go to Gaza soon in solidarity," he told reporters.

The delegation, which is expected to expand, so far includes the foreign ministers of Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan and Morocco, as well as Arabi himself.

A 72-hour cease-fire took hold on Tuesday in the conflict, which is expected to cost the territory up to $6 billion in damage, said Palestinian deputy economy minister Taysir Amro in Ramallah.

A more precise assessment would be carried out once calm returns permanently to the overpopulated sliver of territory where more than 1,850 people were killed and nearly half a million displaced, he said.

  • Meanwhile international Middle East peace envoy Tony Blair and UN Middle East peace process coordinator Robert Serry were scheduled to hold talks with Egyptian officials later on Wednesday.
The Egyptian-mediated 72-hour cease-fire that went into effect on Tuesday has brought relief to both sides after fighting that erupted on July 8 killed 1,875 Palestinians and 67 people on the Israeli side.

The talks in Cairo are aimed at securing a durable cease-fire after the three-day window closes.

Experts say the underlying problems in Gaza, which has undergone three conflicts with Israel since 2008, would also have to be addressed.

  • US Secretary of State John Kerry, in a BBC interview, called for a sustained cease-fire but stressed that the crucial wider issues would need to be tackled.
  • The Palestinians demand an end to the eight-year Israeli blockade of Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
  • They are also demanding an airport be allowed to operate in Gaza, senior Hamas official and delegation member Ezzat al-Rishq said.

Israel, for its part, wants Hamas, which won Palestinian elections in 2006 although designated a terrorist group by the US and Israel, to disarm its militia.

  1. Senior Hamas leader Moussa Abu Marzouq has denied reports about extending a three-day ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip....

"There is no agreement on extending the lull with Israel," Abu Marzouq wrote on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

The denial came shortly after an Israeli official said that his government had agreed to extend the ceasefire with Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip.

Israel and Palestinian factions are observing an Egyptian-brokered three-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip since Tuesday.

Israel has since completely withdrawn its forces from the besieged Palestinian enclave.

The two sides are currently in Cairo for indirect talks aimed at reaching a long-term ceasefire agreement................http://www.aa.com.tr/en/news/369760--hamas-denies-ceasefire-extension

    1. Gaza ceasefire ends as Israel reports rocket fire...

Palestinian militant organisation Hamas has rejected any extension of the three-day ceasefire in Gaza, which expired on Friday morning.

It said that Israel had failed to meet its demands, including the re-opening of Gaza Harbour to shipping.

Several rockets were fired from Gaza at Israel as the ceasefire ended at 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT). Israeli forces have not yet responded to the attacks...................http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-28699741
